Migraine Remedies That Have Helped Me - Part II

I started putting together this article and it was so long that it needed to be split into two different pots. You can see the first 6 migraine remedies I use to keep my headaches and migraines at bay. Here are 6 more…

6 More Migraine Remedies That Have Helped Me:

7:: Exercise daily.

We all carry stress differently, but often migraines are a result of stress. Exercise helps relieve some of the stress. It also releases all those great endorphins that leaving you feeling great. For me, I find that if I can push myself to workout while I have a migraine, I will feel better in the few hours after the workout is over.

8:: Acknowledge and prepare for stressful situations before they occur.

This is one of the things that I have the hardest time with, but it is one of the things that I find most helpful. If I can recognize and admit to things that will be stressful before they take place, I have found that they actually end up being less stressful and therefor less migraine inducing. For instance, maybe I have some kind of appointment with a stranger - a migraine-inducing moment for me. I spend time thinking about it before hand, considering the worst thing that could possibly happen and whether I can deal with that. The answer is always ‘yes’ and then the event takes on less importance.

9:: Eat according to a schedule, with a few planned snacks added in.

I don’t skip meals - or at least I try not to. I try to be really disciplined about when I eat and what I eat so that I am fueling my body with what it needs to function well. I also make sure to always have protein-rich snack with me for moments in which I’m feeling hungry or a migraine approaching. It’s amazing what a difference this can make for stopping a migraine as it is forming.

10:: Plan ahead for abnormal days.

All of the above is really good when days function as normal. When you can go to bed and wake up at the same time, when your meals are at the same time. When you can easily fit in your meals and get your water in as needed. But not every day is a normal day. Maybe you are traveling or you are attending an event that will mean a late night. Or you have a handful of meetings that will make normalcy not possible. Think it through ahead of time and consider how you can make things as normal as possible.

For me, a couple things I’ll do, is make sure I have enough water and snacks to get me through the day. I plan out my workouts for the entire week. If I am going to be out late I prep everything so that I can just collapse into bed when I get home and not have to do anything but put my pjs on, wash my face and brush my teeth.

11:: Wear a mouth guard to bed nightly.

I’ve never have mouth-gear before. No braces. No retainer. But now I never go to sleep without my night guard in. Women especially tend to clench their jaws in when they are stressed and since we tend to work through a lot of that in our sleep, that is the time when it can be the worst. As my dentist pointed out to me, the muscle that runs to your jaw runs up along the side of your head - the location where migraines often occur.

12:: Sunglasses

My friends and family joke that that they can always tell when I have a migraine because I squint my eyes to keep some of the light out. It’s so true. I like dark rooms and prefer sitting in poorly-lit spots than the well-lit ones. I also am obsessed with having sunglasses with me at all times. Even on gray days I might need them. I have a pair that is always in my purse, two in my car, two at home. And I don’t even go on short walks without them on if it is sunny.
