One of the coolest trends in fashion these days is the ease with which we can get our hands on designer items – if only for a short amount of time. The latest company to catch my eye in this field is DesignerShare – a Chicago-based start-up that is making it ease to rent designer items from other Chicagoans.
The concept is pretty awesome in its simplicity. Those that have a designer item – purse, dress, jewelry, jacket, etc – list the item and a rental price on the site. Those looking for a designer piece, perhaps for a special event, can rent the item for a week or two. DesignerShare takes care of the pick-up and drop-off of items. It also takes care of the cleaning after an item has been used and before it is returned to the original owner.
Right now, I’m working on listing a couple of the items I own, but in the meantime I rented a GORGEOUS red leather coach bag. The bag was mine for two weeks. During that time I took it everywhere – downtown for a day with my sister, to a conference for millenial women, to work. It felt glamorous to carry around for those two weeks.
While I had no big event I rented the item for, I know others use the service to have a designer item for a fancy wedding or a weekend in Vegas. And since it is cheaper than Rent the Runway, this is a win-win.
DesignerShare is a start-up that is growing quickly. In the month I’ve had an account, I’ve seen the number of listed items more than double, with new things being added almost daily. And the size range and price range also covers the spectrum. There is bound to be something that catches your eye.
