Build Your Own Website – GoDaddy GoCentral Website Builder

A promotional item was provided to me for today’s discussion. All thoughts and opinions are my own. The host for this event is Still Blonde after all these Years.

As of this April I will have been at this blogging game for 10 years. Crazy! Over these years, I have redesigned and paid various people to recreate my blog multiple times. In the beginning, I did it myself, trying my hand at little tweaks, but before too long it was too difficult to make the changes myself and not mess up something. But as with all things these days, technology is advancing and making things easier even for the non-techy. Now GoDaddy, which is where I have my blog’s domain through, has the GoCentral Website Builder which makes website creation pretty simple and all kinds of basic, while still looking professional. It’s never been easier to build your own website.

I took a whirl on the website builder and imagined actually making the site my sisters and I have been talking about creating for a couple years now but haven’t bothered to pull the plug. The journey begins when you pick a website topic and a name. I went with lifestyle and Four Whiskey Chicks. From there, GoCentral Website Builder takes you to a screen filled with various designs. Since they can be changed and tweaked for fonts and colors it’s best to pick a style you like and ignoring the changeable options.

Once you pick your design, that’s when the fun really begins. Now you get to put your creative hat on and get to designing, tweaking and changing the site to your preferences. I started by creating my site’s pages to get an idea of what different looks I could have and what could be made. When you add a page, the website builder gives you a dozen or so different options for the type of section you are making. Click the one you want and then several different designs appear. For instance there are five different designs for an ‘About Me’ page. Click the one you want and then get to tweaking, changing, and personalizing the page.

One of the drawbacks I found to these pre-created design elements is that most things only allow for three sections. You can delete sections but can’t add more than three. So, I couldn’t add individual little bios for all FOUR Whiskey Girls using the pre-made sections. I would need to use a different format or re-think the way I wanted it to look in order to fit into the pre-made designs.Screen Shot 2017-03-09 at 7.34.06 PM Screen Shot 2017-03-09 at 7.37.36 PM

After making the pages and entering in the information I wanted I then went on to tweak the theme – trying out multiple different fonts and colors. For me, I designed in this order because I wanted to see the changes to my actual content. I liked the look of Luxe for my purposes, but the Craft theme was also fun and would have been my second choice.

After deciding on the theme I went about changing the colors and trying out different fonts. In the end I changed the color scheme but kept the original font suggested. There are about a dozen font options and plenty of color choices.

When you are ready to publish you can preview before hitting the final publish button. Not only does the GoCentral Website Builder give you a preview of what the website will look like online but it also gives you a mobile preview – which is essential in today’s smartphone obsessed culture. It’s also awesome that you don’t need to worry about optimizing the site for mobile since it is already part of the design.

Like what you see? Ready to go? Publish your site with a simple click on the publish button. Wait a minute or so while it processes and then you have a new, professional-looking, and totally personalized website that is all your own. It’s simple to use – taking me about an hour to put together the basics of the site. Even if you need a number of additional components than what I want in a site, this is still so much easier than coding the site yourself and trying to figure out how to get things in the manner you want. This takes so much of the work and the guess work out of website creation.

This looks like such an amazing tool for building a website when you don’t know much about the actual mechanics.

I’ve been thinking about starting a blog for awhile now but the technical aspects is what holds me back. I don’t know anything about coding and creating a site, so it always seemed daunting. This makes it seem much more attainable. Thanks for the review!
