In the Zone… When a protein boost is a must

I have been compensated by ZonePerfect for this post; however, I am sharing my own thoughts. All opinions are my own. #zoneperfectlittlewins #littlewins

Most mornings I start the day with a fruit and veggie-infused smoothie. I add a little kiefer for protein and kale for all the good protein, potassium, calcium and such it contains. Then after that comes a menagerie of fruits and a few veggies too, when the occasion calls for it.

For lunch I go with a veggie-rich salad. For example, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers were all in today’s packed meal, along with a little meat. For dinner I’ll have a classic American dinner of meat, veggies usually some starch and a salad.

While these meals are healthy and make me feel so much better overall, they aren’t always enough to get me through an entire day, especially if there is a marathon training workout involved. If I’m working out in the morning I know I’ll be ravenous by the middle of the afternoon. If I worked out the night before I will be really, really hungry by the middle of the morning.

All of this means snacks are a must. A little ’emergency’ snack for when I feel my stomach is trying to eat itself, especially one that is rich in protein, like a Zone Perfect bar, is a great option. Because, you know, sometimes it is about the Little Wins.

There are a number of times during the week that I’ll reach for one of these to keep me going and to help me power through the rest of my day. With more than 10 grams of protein in a single bar, it’s a great source of energy that is long lasting and certainly better than a cup of sugary coffee or a candy bar.

I reach for a Little Win during the mid-morning coffee break, when I need a little warmth (because school is freezing right now) and a little energy.

I reach for a Little Win when it’s time to buckle down in the afternoon and crank out some grading or blogging.

I reach for a little win in the midst of a long workout, when I want to give up and yet I want to keep on target to run that sub-2 half marathon in November.

Or I’ll reach for a little win on the weekends when I’m running errands, restocking my refrigerator, heading out to take photos for the blog, stopping at the bank and post office, and therefore sometimes missing a meal or putting it off until later in the day when all the running around is done.

Have you tried Zone Perfect bars? They come in a variety of flavors, so it’s easy to find one you enjoy. The salted caramel brownie is my personal favorite. They are sold in Walmart and can be found in the pharmacy section.

What are your little wins of the day? When do you reach for a little protein boost to help you keep going?
