Recently my little brother made a big leap and put an offer in on a foreclosed house. After negotiations, inspections, permits, more inspections and a whole slue of other things, he’s purchased the place and completed the major renovations – like recreating the entire kitchen, which the previous ticked-off owners gutted to get back at the bank for foreclosing on them. (Classy, right?!)
So now that he’s ready to move in, he’s realizing all the things he doesn’t have. And since he didn’t purchase, what I would consider a starter home, but rather a 4-bedroom, 2 1/2 bath place, he needs A LOT of stuff. The family has been putting our heads together to come up with the essentials for any well run house, so here are my housewarming gift ideas for my bachelor brother and anyone else who’s moving into their own full-sized place for the first time.
8 Housewarming Gift Ideas:
Coffee Maker – No, not all coffee makers are made equal. Personally, I’m loving this Braun BrewSense Drip Coffee Maker. It has a 12-cup capacity, which will allow him to savor the coffee as he gets ready in the morning and take a large to-go cup with him to work. The Stainless steel finish is sleek and good looking in any kitchen, but especially a guy’s. Plus is has the option to adjust the brew strength so that when I visit I can have a regular cup of coffee, while he can get his usual bold flavor. Plus, with the filter basket there is no need to worry about purchasing coffee filters and creating extra waste.
Cases of Good Beer – Let’s be honest, a new homeowner who is worried about purchasing curtains and couches, isn’t going to be spending money on the good beer. It’s going to be light inexpensive beers, if anything. When I first went over to my brothers I brought him a mixed case of my favorite New Belgium brews, including the Heavy Melon (a new fav.). For awhile it was the only thing in his fridge. He’s still getting set up.
Hand Blender – For years I scoffed at hand blenders, thinking a good old fashioned fork or whisk could do the job. And then I got a hand blender and suddenly my life was simplified. Scrambling a dozen eggs takes half the time it used to and even the clean up some how feels easier too. The Braun Multiquick 7 Hand Blender is the Cadillac of hand blenders. This thing does it all. It blends, chops, whips, slices, shreds and mashes, with attachments that include a beaker, whisk, 6-cup food processor and masher. This baby simplifies any recipe up your sleeve. Maybe it will even get my brother cooking some.
American Flag – No house is complete, especially in a family that has a brother in the Marines, without an American flag. We snagged him a simple one that can be mounted to the front of his house, so he can fly it proudly daily or even just for our national holidays. It will probably fly near the Cubs Win flag.
Must-Have DVD Collection – A handful of DVDs across the spectrum to make entertaining easy for any group. Perhaps a cartoon for when the nephews and niece visit, a Rom-Com for a date night, a couple action-packed flicks, and of course a couple family favorites (for us that would be the classic Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and The Princes Bride.)
Blender – No household is complete without a blender, and really no party is complete without one. My brother got this Braun PureMix Blender just in time for his housewarming party. We mixed up some killer drinks with it. This thing does it all, with setting that allow you to stir, mix, chop, puree, liquefy and crush ice. (Post of the recipe to our Mango Margaloda to come later this week! Trust me, it’s delicious and a part favorite.)
Cleaning Collection – This is essential for any home, but especially for a bachelor pad. It’s good to start them off with a house cleaning kit, complete with dust cloths, cleaning rags, mop, broom, buckets and all sorts of soaps and cleaning liquids to clean every surface. Heck, the collection could even include basics like hand soap for the bathrooms and dish soap for the kitchen.
Spice Rack – This is another thing that doesn’t top the priority list for the typical first-time home owner, but it can also be a nice gift that they appreciate for months to come. We’re hoping a great spice rack, filled with the typical and a few unusual spices will help him up his cooking game, or at least take a little interest in adding a little flavor to his Sunday morning scrambled eggs.
What are your housewarming gift ideas? Do you agree a coffee maker, blender, and hand blender are essential kitchen items?
