This weekend a friend is getting married. For the past two years, this girl has lived at the residence I run and therefore a large number of other residents are invited to the event. What to wear to a summer wedding is never as easy task to determine. My week has been filled with trial runs by different people, where they come parading into my office in a dress begging for help pairing it with shoes and accessories. It’s been a very fun and unexpected part of this job. This morning when another resident came tip-toeing in with an adorable brown patterned dress, I realized there was a blog post in all this. Thanks to Polyvore here are nine different outfit options to consider when heading off to a summer wedding.
What to Wear to a Summer Wedding: (things to keep in mind)
- Find out what time the wedding ceremony is and the reception. If there is a large gap, sometimes an outfit change is suggested.
- Look up the reception venue to get an idea of how formal or casual the reception will be. Attire will vary greatly if the reception is in a line-dancing barn versus a country club.
- Grab a shawl, scarf or little sweater to wear for the actual ceremony. It is usually a form of respect to go a little more covered up if it is a religious service.
- Dress according to your style but if you have a lot of flare you might want to tone down a little so as not to steal the spotlight from the bride.
- Practice moving around in your heels. There is nothing worse than needing to take your shoes off an hour after the whole thing begins.
- To avoid blisters on your feet from all day in high heels, smear a small amount of Vaseline all along your foot, especially where the edges of the shoe hit. You will avoid blisters entirely – although it doesn’t help with aching feet.
- Consider wearability. If you pick a dress that wrinkles easily you will look like a mess after a few hours and a disaster by the end of the night.
- Plan ahead for undergarments. Slips, strapless bras, spanx, whatever it is make sure to try it all on ahead of time to confirm everything fits and looks just like it is supposed to.
Tell me… what was the best dress you’ve found/worn for a summer wedding?

love the pink dress with purple pumps combo!
Dude, I actually do want to wear pink if it looks like this (comes from person that doesn’t like pink)

Great post Katy… I had so many wedding this year already… some of them were fancy quintessential English ones where the ladies wore hats and the guys morning suits… how terribly formal?!
I will also add eat well before the ceremony as there’s usually sometime after the church and the morning breakfast – and then there’s the champagne drinking on an empty stomach prior to the meal… not a good idea!
It is so hot here (in Greece), that women actually aren’t afraid to go for something strappy or short…
Thanks for your comment lovely!

So true about the eating, or at least bringing snacks. I remember being so hungry at my sisters wedding. It seemed like forever in between breakfast and when we finally sat down to dinner.
This will probably shock you but I only own ONE dress LOL. I’ve worn it to every wedding I’ve gone to, no matter the season.
Question… is it still taboo to wear white to a wedding?

The black dresses are my favorites, of course, but the black and white patterned is a stunner! Especially with pink accessories– how fun!

I love all the dress ideas, and the pictures too. Thanks for posting this. Also, I just wanted to re-emphasize the point you made about looking up the time, weather, and location. I recently attended a wedding venue on the Monterey beach. We we’re forewarned to wear casual clothes, with sandals. Although it was a lot of fun, there were a few individuals who didn’t read the invitation and thought “on the beach” meant “in a house, on the beach”. It’s an understandable mistake, but you should definitely look up information about the venue beforehand. Thanks again for sharing.
Love all those dress choices! Very cute!

My BEST dress was one I found at H&M on clearance for $15. It was black, A-line, and hit me just about at the knee (maybe a little below). It was wash-and-wear, and had removable straps. I was lucky enough to find it just before our “big” wedding year (2005 I believe), which was the year we had 10 weddings. TEN! I wore it to 8 of them (two were black tie and I wore gowns). It was the best find, held up beautifully, and was so versatile I could wear it on back to back weekends without anyone being the wiser (and some people we did overlap parties with). I wore it much like you show in your top image, with neutral shoes, metallics, and pops of color. I used bags, scarves and wraps to give different looks. It was great.
I got rid of the dress–it was starting to show wear–and now have a couple of black dresses I rotate for events.
