I think there is something biologically wrong with my nails. My nailbeds are short – the shortest in my whole family. They crack, break, peel and tear easily. And the worst of all – they hate nail polish while I love the stuff. For some reason I can’t get polish that will stay one for more than 2 days without looking like a disaster by day three. It’s really kind of odd.
Still, with all that said I have been trying to take better care of my nails hoping that a little TLC will go a long way in improving the quality of my nails. I have a friend who is convinced you can create longer nail beds if you take care of them and try to keep your nails as long as possible. I’m not sure if she is right, but I’m trying her theory and so far it does seem to be helping. Weird, right?!
I’ve tried a number of nail polish types over the years and have found a few that seem to be longer lasting or at least better on my nails. I am obsessed with Seche products. They work to strengthen the nails and Even just the strengthening coat goes a long way in making my nails look a little more polished and pretty. The polish also makes my nails stronger without becoming stiff.
I’m also a huge fan of shellac, because that at least stays on for up to 10 days without chipping. It’s astounding actually. My nails grow to fast to last three weeks like some lucky people can. Does anyone have one of those at-home shellac kits? I’ve always wondered if they are worth the investment and if they last as long as the salon version.

I struggled with that as well and my mom who has gorgeous long nails said you have to keep them painted. Even if it’s just a clear coat, so I did that and my nails are longer then they have ever been. I am also not a fan of cheap-o nail salons because of the tools they use. So I would say give yourself a mani every 2 weeks, buff them, push back the cuticles (don’t cute), add a strengthening polish (I like Rejuvacote) and make sure you’re taking your vitamins! I also obsessively put lotion on my hands and around the cuticle area. Have no idea if that helps with strengthening them but it couldn’t hurt, right? Hope your nail situation improves!

Have you thought about taking Biotin? It has really helped my nail and hair health overall. I would also try Incoco polish strips my cousin had similar problems with her nails, in terms of polish not adhering, and they were great for her.

Such a strange bit of advice, but hope it continues to work for you! The colors you choose are always gorgeous

I use the Revlon colorstay base coat and top coat with pretty much any colored nail polish and it keeps the chipping at bay for easily 5 and often 7 days or more. Of course that probably has something to do with the fact that there are 6 coats of polish on my nails! It is worth it for me though because I cannot stand chipped nails. They drive me bonkers!
One easy tip, make sure you are eating plenty of protein! It really seems to help with both hair and nail growth and strength.
Happy Friday!

Hey sweets, remember my posts about nails? If you aren’t taking Appearex and Viviscal, you should be! They really will help your nails. They’re a worthy investment (www.drugstore.com). And I was going to recomment Shellac or Gelish, which I’ve found has major staying power. I’ve heard great things about the Sensationail at home gel kit.
When it comes to nails, I’ve become even more fanatical. They get attention no matter what you do…we’re always using our hands. I’ve been doing gels for 3/4 of a year now, and every few weeks I say, THIS IS THE LAST ONE! I want to save money, but they are just so low-maintenance and damn it, I’m addicted. And three weeks between manis? Um, no. I only ever go two, save for when I was in Oz for three weeks and had to go the distance (and they did). On that note, I’m at that stage again. I really am going to bail on the gels for the rest of summer when my nails break less, and pick them back up in the colder months when they break easily because of the cold air.
Good luck, and seriously, get those supplements!

Never even considered my nails like this before! I have strong nails, so strong that when I get manicures the ladies always complain how hard it is to cut them. Thanks for making me feel good about my abnormally strong nails!

Hi Katy,
Having been on meds last year that made me lose half my hair
my hairdresser recommended Sea Kelp supplements, and as a great side effect I found that my nails became really strong (apparently hair & nails are made of similar stuff) and whilst my meds have been changed (much better) I daren’t stop taking the kelp ‘just in case’… And my nails are sooo strong i can even open ring pull cans without worrying! Though the nature of my job means nail varnish looks tatty very quickly, at least now I don’t feel the need to cover up lovely long nails – a coat of clear is fine
Just something to try,
Cheers,
Helen L
I have short nail beds too, and it drives me crazy how I can’t seem to get that long nail look. I pretty much gave up in the last few months and embraced that I have tiny short nails on little fingers. I really like the Sally Hansen nail stickers which oddly enough I wrote a post about recently. I add a top coat and they stay in place quite well. I make sure to really clean my nails well before applying per their instructions. I hope you find something that works.

I like your nail colors. For my past time, I put colors on my nails. I like adding top coating on the nails and these brand of color nails are so perfect for my nails.
