Fashion and Candy

by katyrose on July 30, 2012

Did you catch Thursday’s Project Runway? I have to admit, I’m loving the show more than I thought I would. It’s reality TV with a fashion twist, but I think what I like the most is how each contestant is very unique and focused on their personal style. Sure, I don’t understand what some of them wear or design, but they are remaining true to themselves and their audience. Plus, it’s inspiring to see each of them take a concept and turn it into reality.

For their second challenge the contestants took a trip to Dylan’s Candy Bar and had to grab items to use in the creation of couture! Love the concept. it’s fun, original and certainly challenged the designers to think WAY outside the box. Candy!! (Sidenote: in all the time I’ve spent living and visiting NYC I have never made it to Dylan’s. What’s up with that?)

I was trying to envision what I kind of candy I would use to create a couture gown. I’m thinking Jelly Bellys! You can get them in all  different colors and there could be some crazy design work going with that.

Have you been watching? Who are your favorites? I’m personally torn between Ven and Christopher. I think they both create stunning pieces that take serious hard work and dedication. Christopher is all about the allusion and Ven’s pieces are wonderfully feminine.

I think Ven is amazing but I must be honest and say that I really REALLY liked the black dress with gum balls. I don’t remember the name of the guy that made it but I thought it was super cute and should have been in the top three :) But in the end…VEN for me!

I don’t like either one of those dresses and wouldn’t wear either one. Of course I’m not shaped like those girls and maybe if I was…….

I get annoyed by watching super skinny people. But I do love seeing designers at work. I love the fast pase environment and the competition is OUCH!

I really miss watching Project Runway. I didn’t agree with the judges a few years back and have been boycotting the show ever since. It was when Gretchen won over Mondo. What a neat challenge. I want to eat those dresses, lol. I should stop holding grudges and just watch it again.

If you’d watched this show back when it was actually good, you would realize the candy challenge is a return to form, not “original”.

Derivatives aside, since the switch to Lifetime this show has sucked major balls, and the contestants are all about maximizing drama now, not talent.

If you’re going to try to capitalize on a show that is already past its prime, at least say something relevant.

In terms of women’s fashion, dresses are becoming more and more beautiful and more fabulous. These dresses are showing beautiful curves. It seems designers have gone a long way in designing wearable, smart, chic women’s fashion clothes. So, good luck to all amazing designers.
