Did you know that both the mansions in Newport, RI and Martha’s Vineyard are listed among the 1,000 Places to See Before You Die? Well, they are and I managed to check those two places off my ‘to-see’ checklist while family was in town this past week! (Scroll to the end for a NEW giveaway!)
I’ve actually been to Newport several times before, but I knew my interior design sister would love to see the mansions. So we grabbed tickets to tour both the stunning Breakers and the gaudy Marble House. They arm you with video recorders that walk you through the houses explaining each room asĀ you go. If you want more information you can program that into the device or you can keep going. While, I like personal tours because you can ask questions, this was a great way to see the mansion at your own pace. Some people zip through. We certainly took our time. Especially with the rain, that only seemed to pour the moment we stepped outside, having an indoor place to explore was a treat.
The following day we braved the horrible weather and headed to Martha’s Vineyard with the hope that we would get a respite from the spitting rain that had cursed us the entire visit. Of course, we couldn’t find the parking lot since it is located 4 miles from the dock, so we missed the 10:45 passenger boat, needing to take a cargo boat instead. At least that was an adventure. We grabbed Cape Cod chips and drinks from a grocery store, rented bikes and explored the island while riding around. I think we biked at least 25 miles that day and the best part – while it was overcast and chilly most of the day it didn’t rain at all! Plus, in addition to be one of the 1,000 places to see before you die it also happens to be on my 101 in 1001 list!
If you’ve never been I highly recommend making plans for both these places. They are an adventure waiting to happen.
