I think I can honestly say that Instagram has changed the way I blog – and that is something I never expected.
When I first had the option to upgrade my phone after Verizon finally jumped on the iPhone bandwagon, I knew without a doubt that the iPhone was for me. If my Mac loving ways weren’t proof enough, there was Instagram – that elite iPhone-user only app that managed to glam up even the most bland picture. Instagram might not have been the only reason I switched from a Droid but it certainly was a large contributing factor.
At the time I expected to just have fun tweeting my photos and documenting my life in this new and creative way. I thought of it like a game and it was one I planned to master. But then suddenly I started using the application and found it was a lot more than just a game. It was changing the way I looked at situations and blogging opportunities. Pre-Instagram I would lament needing to lug my camera around to take photos at every event and place I happened upon. And then there was the struggle to make these photos look good in poor lighting or less-than-ideal situations. But with Instagram there is no extra piece of equipment needed. I don’t go anywhere without my phone, which means I am never without Instagram. And those bad locations are suddenly null and void with a fun filter or blurring effect.
And then there is blogging itself. There were times in the past where I debated how best to illustrate a non-outfit post. There is always the chance of pulling a photo and attributing the source online but I worry about doing that and try to avoid it when possible. Now an artsy Instagram shot fills that void without too much thought. Or there are the weekends I spend traveling that I take Instagram shots but refuse to lug my camera around and then edit a bunch of photos. I still want to blog about my time away and Instagram is the perfect way to do that. (Like last month’s trip to Washington, DC or February’s trip to Stowe, VT.)
I could go on and on, but I won’t bore you… (Oh and you haven’t read Vahni’s post on Statigram and Instagram read it! I’m sold on Statigram after reading it.)
