My Blogging Tools – an FBFF post

by katyrose on February 24, 2012

After watching/reading all the New York Fashion Week coverage I realized there is a whole lot of technology that goes into making a bloggers life possible. In this world of instant communication and expectations of more information, quicker, better, faster – a blogger has a huge and often daunting task of staying on top of everything. Technology is the key. This week’s Fashion/Beauty Friend Friday questions focus on this subject.

1. What are the tools you use to blog? I don’t think people realize how much goes into blogging. It is more than just a girl and her computer – way more! Here’s what I use in order to create ModlyChic.

Technology:

  • MacBook Pro – It’s almost 4 years old now, so it is literally on its last leg. But it works and I am going to milk it for every minute I can get out of it.
  • iPhone – Forget the phone feature. I use this for email, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, FourSquare, Texting and everything else in between.
  • Canon Powershot SX130 – The ‘fashion bloggers camera’ – this takes up to 10 shots in a row using the timer!

Computer Programs:

  • Word – I need someplace to write posts.
  • iPhoto – This is where I store all the photos I take
  • Photoshop – Photo cropping, sizing, tweaking and framing all happens with this handy program.
  • iCalendar – how I keep track of upcoming events.
  • iTunes – Gotta have the tunes going while I write posts and work with photos.
  • WordPress – Switched from blogger a little over a year ago and would never go back. It’s s darn easy to use.

Social Media:

  • Twitter – My favorite form of social media and the easiest way to connect with other bloggers.
  • Facebook – I keep my blog page updated, but use this mostly to connect with family and friends.
  • Instagram – Probably the number one reason I purchased an iPhone instead of another Droid product.
  • Pose – Occasionally upload photos of outfit details that I like.
  • Triberr – My use has highly diminished from several months ago, but it is still a great way to support fellow bloggers.
  • Pinterest – I’m not a huge pinner but I do pin when I see something I’d really like to remember.
  • Polyvore – More and more I find myself heading here to make collages and outfit inspiration posts.
  • Stumble Upon – I use it t find inspiration and promote inspiration.

Miscellaneous:

  • Gorilla pod – My tripod of choice, although it is not fool proof. It did drop a previous camera of mine. BOO
  • Batteries – yeah, my camera is kinda old-school like that and it runs on batteries.
  • External hard drive – Where I store all my documents.
  • Desk calendar – This is how I track my posts and create my editorial calendar.

2. What technology item is on your wish-list? A new MacBook is certainly high on the list, as is an iPad. I think life would be a lot easier with an iPad to tweet and post from. *sigh* someday. Maybe.

3. Through the barrage of posts, tweets, pics, poses, messages, etc… how do you avoid becoming a slave to the constant infiltration of information? I find this happens to me a lot more often than I would like to admit. I hate the thought of being tied to my phone for every tweet and email but that is exactly what happens to me. Once a year I go for a week without the use of any technology. It helps me restart my system and re-prioritize what is really important and what isn’t. I now try not to check my emails/tweets/comments as soon as I wake up each morning and before going to bed at night. Instead I cut myself off around 10 at night and don’t pick it back up until after I’ve gotten ready for the day and had my breakfast. I’m a lot happier and, oddly enough, more effective that way too.

Whether you are a blogger or not what is the piece of technology that you couldn’t live without?

What kind of stuff do you pin that leads people to your blog? I’ve never thought of using Pinterest as a tool like that.

It isn’t just a matter of what you pin, but also what others pin. Every photo going from your site, links back to your blog, so people can follow the trail and see your blog. I post some of my fav outfits as well as the polyvore collages I make and, of course, a lot of pics from other blogs too.

still haven’t joined pinterest because I simply cannot handle another social app right now, but weirdly enough I get a lot of traffic from the site. I assume it’s because my blog is so visual.

Yay, I don’t use it too often. But they have a very simple tool you can put in the bar of your browser to make pinning very simple. Without that I don’t think I would use it as often.

Congrats on getting in the top 5! There are a lot of tools that go into blogging. But it becomes second nature after awhile.

This was interesting – even if I’m not a very “technical” blogger, it turns out that I use more tools than I would’ve thought!

My thoughts are exactly the same on #2! My computer is also on it’s last leg, so I feel like I’ll need to replace it soon and an iPad is definitely high on my wishlist! Also, I didn’t realize quite so many tools I use until I saw your long list here :)

The day I get an iPad will be one of the best days ever!! What a great tool. Too bad they are so darn expensive for someone as broke as me.

I focused on software instead of hardware, but I’m a MacBook Pro/iPhone girl, too! I finally upgraded my beloved MBP that was 4 years old to a new one in November.

Isn’t that the best feeling… when you get to take the new computer out of the box and start to mess around on it to make it your own. Love that!!

Woops I didn’t include all my social media stuff because it’s not a tool FOR blogging, but it helps the creative process or finding other blogs… that’s for sure.

I soo try not to check my phone first thing in the morning and before I go to bed. What helps is to keep my phone in my office (along with the laptop) which is way on the other side of the house! (yeah that’s how bad it gets sometimes!)

MJ – that is so smart. I need to have my phone near me at night but it would certainly be a lot less tempting if I could put it somewhere else at night.

Great post. My MacBook is 8 years old, so you may be surprised how much life your laptop has left.

For some reason I can’t get the backlink right yet again this month. Oh well

8 YEARS?!! How in the world did you manage that? Mine is already so slow I can’t imagine it in another 4 years. That is amazing.

Haha, I feel the same way about my iPhone… Phone? Who uses that? My MacBook Pro is 2.5 years old now and my hard drive is completely full– I have to transfer files to my external every two weeks. As soon as this thing is out of warranty it’s getting some major upgrades. I don’t want to get a new one because the prices have gone up so much on the 15 and 17in models lately!

It is so expensive! I’m dreading the day this baby dies and I need to replace it. Exciting to get a new one but man are they expensive, especially once you load the software and all that.

It really is amazing how many different technologies are combined into making our blogs, maintaining the blog, and interacting within the community of bloggers. I have gained so many new skills that I never even considered before I started blogging. I thought I would just post some pictures and compose some text. So much more goes into it.

How true is that! I thought it would be as simple as writing and photo-taking. That is only one small aspect of the over-all blogging experience. I suppose I could just work on posts, but that wouldn’t be nearly as fun as what I do now.

One thing I do for my sanity is no iphone or computer in my bedroom. If they were in there, well, I’d never get any sleep.

Anne – that is so smart. When I had my own home office, it was a lot easier to do that. Now it’s nearly impossible. *sigh* maybe someday I’ll be back to that mode. It would make things a lot less tempting, that’s for sure.

Hi! I found you through a post about Blog Better Boston. Love your blog!

I noticed you are on Google+, not Google Friend Connect. I’m new to the blogging world but heard about how GFC is being phased out. Is that why you’re on +? Just trying to learn as much as I can! Thanks!
