The 5 Items to Buy this Fall to Update Your Wardrobe

by katyrose on October 4, 2011

This fall I’m loving so many of the trends. (My top 10 favorite fall trends.) The stores are chalked full of great items, any one of which I could see adding to my closet. And as great as a fall fashion-inspired shopping trip would be, I don’t have that kind of cash. I need to be selective about my purchases – which got me thinking: if I could only buy 5 new items this fall which ones would it be?

The 5 Items to Buy This Fall to Update Your Wardrobe

1. Scarf – in animal print or polka dots. I’m a huge scarf fan and these little ditties can be matched up with any outfit you’re trying to work. They add a great little extra to any look. Sign me up for this infinity leopard-print scarf or this great snake-print wrap.

2. Pencil Skirt. This feminine piece is so refreshing and classic. Talk about old-school style – this is the epitome of it. Plus they come in a wide variety of colors and patterns: black, animal, red, plaid, sequin, leather, gray, polka dot, oh and COBALT blue! (Picture from the adorable Pencil Skirts and Lattes.)

3. Colored Jeans. Tuck them into tall boots, wear them with flats, layer them under tunics or long vests… however you wear them it’s going to be great and a style you can go back to over and over again. I’m loving these adorable cobalt blue jeans, pink jeans, purple jeans, rust orange jeans, teal jeans and  green jeans.

4. Laced-up Boots. Every season you’re going to need to get a new pair, might as well make this pair a fun laced-up version of the knee-highs. Light brown booties, gray flats, and these adorable high-heeled knee-high boots.

5. Anything Gem Toned. A dress, a top, a coat… anything in the gem tone that is perfect for your skin tone and hair color. I’m going with the sapphire blue gem tones. This lovely party dress is perfect for holiday parties.

Animal print scarf – check, pencil skirt – check, gem-toned dress – check! That leaves me with coloured jeans, I’m thinking of orange or red:) I’ll pass on the lace up boots, though, they don’t look good on me.

Red or orange pants sounds amazing! I’m loving the green ones I managed to snag at a thrift store.

I have all five of these items. Your post has inspired me to pull out my polka dot scarf today or tomorrow.

Look at you – so ahead of the trend! Way to go. I need to finish up with lace boots and I’m all set. (well and maybe some more animal print items. I love that.)

Thanks for the tips! Wishing I would have bought the leopard scarf I saw, but polka dots would be good too!

Jealous of your laced-up boots. I need to find one of those. I think that is top on my list this season.

Great tips! I am on a shopping freeze but so happy to know I have all these already. Except the lace up boots. Sigh, what I would give for a pair…

In so much agreement with this post! I am lagging on the pencil skirt and gem-toned pieces, though – haven’t been able to find ones that I’ve fallen in love with just yet. Definitely in on the printed scarf (leopard!), coloured jeans (just bought an awesome red pair from Zara), lace up boots (combat and heeled!).

P.S. I found your blog when Googling some fashion blog tips. I’m new to the scene and am still trying to figure it out. You’ve got a great thing going here! :)

Great post. The biggest surprise for me this season was the discovery of how much I am really liking that snake print trend. I am working on the colored pants. (-:

I lucked out on the colored pants trend and got a pair at a local thrift store for barely anything. But I’m with you on the snake print – I need to find some great items in that print.

It seems like there are so many things I want this fall and yet I’m actually trying not to buy anything. Don’t know how that’s going to go. I actually have everything on your list except for colored jeans. I’d love pink!

Stay strong on not buying things if that is your goal. But I personally think a couple great thought-through new pieces is one way cut down on the spending. Planned spending is the way to go.

I recently bought a pencil skirt that I’m planning to pair with my dotted top. I was also looking for colored skinny jeans, but still no success. I do have some deep burgundy red trousers, does that count? (:

I already love scarves, so that’s an easy thing for me to get in my closet… and animal prints just make them that much more fun. I could really use a pencil skirt though!

Think all I’m missing is colored jeans – if only I could find a pair that fit and flattered! I might just stock up on the scarves and boots to make up for it. ;)
