DIY Clay Bangles

by katyrose on September 1, 2011

While I was home for a short visit earlier this month, I rallied my siblings together as we watched Tangled and had a little bangle making party. I first got this idea from a post DWJ did on The Art of Accessories.

This is seriously the easiest and sweetest DIY craft! My favorite part about these homemade sensations is the fact that they don’t clank and make a ton of noise when layered together.

The Sculpey clay comes in dozens of different colors. You can come up with any combination you want. I grabbed this amazing sparkling silver color and then some other bold colors to go with the summer’s in shades.

Here’s how to make your own bangles:

  1. Buy Scupley or other heat-setting clay from a local craft store or online.
  2. Grab a chunk and roll it out between your hands.
  3. Come up with some preferred pattern. Perhaps two strands twisted, or three strands braided. Or a jumble of colors rolled out together.
  4. Roll the clay out to be about 8 inches long. (we made our entire set too big. Now they are going to be used for a modified game of horseshoes.)
  5. Piece the ends together forming a tight seal.
  6. Place the bracelet on a cooking sheet.
  7. Preheat the over to 275*
  8. Bake the bracelets for about 15 minutes.
  9. Allow bracelets time to cool.
  10. Optional: add a glossy finish to the bracelets to give them a polished look.

I love these! I’m just starting to get comfortable wearing a little jewelry and these look like something I’d wear. I also work with senior citizens who love to make jewelry but have a hard time with small finger motions. These will be perfect for them! Thank you for posting.

Katy, this is such an awesome idea! I’m thinking about doing this with my friends, maybe having a bracelet making party with wine, awesome beer, and a movie!

I’m no crafter, but even I think I could do these :) And they look like they would be super fun to try with my 7-year-old daughter.

I’ve been thinking about doing this DIY with my daughter. This may be the push I needed.

Awesome project! Funny, I was looking in the art store wanting some, but wondering what I could do with it. Now I know, I”m going to try this. Thanks for sharing!

I’m definitely going to try this! I’m very familiar with sculptey (use to work for craft stores), but I never even thought of using it to make bracelets! Thanks so much for posting it!

So cool! Going on my to-do list, for sure! I think my eleven year old niece would totally dig this project too, being the hip chic that she is.
