Friend Friday: Summer Trends 2011

Whoa! I’m back from vacation. I was beginning to think I would have nothing to say or write about summer trends. But then, I stepped on to the plane in San Francisco in 65* weather and stepped out of the airport in Boston to a balmy 90* – what a difference. It’s got me craving sun and heat and all the fashion that goes with it. Here are my top 5 picks for Summer Fashion Trends. Can’t wait to see what everyone else lists!

Summer Fashion Trends 2011:

  1. Neon nails. I have a love/hate relationship with my nails. If I manage to grow them out, which takes FOREVER, I can paint them and look like a fairly normal feminine hand. If, however I try and paint them as they usually are – short – they look like an 8-year-old tried to paint her own stubby fingers. Not pretty. So since I took the time to grow mine out this summer and am trying to cross one of the items off my random 30 by 30 bucket list – I’ve had the chance to experiment with colors. I’m loving the bold oranges, greens, and pinks of the season.
  2. Floral shoes. Yes, the floral trend is everywhere. And I’m not really falling for it in leaps and bounds. But I am a sucker for a great pair of bold floral shoes. Personally, I prefer the large patterns over the tiny ones. Something like these shoes below… or maybe even more out there in terms of colors.
  3. Tangerine. I’m not sure I can wear it as a stand-alone top or dress, but I am loving this bright orange color as an accessory or an accent. It is so fresh and alive it makes me want to sip mojitos at an outdoor patio.
  4. Colored jeans. I like both the bright colored jeans we’ve been seeing all spring and the lighter pastel colors that are coming in now. They are structured and youthful, offering a new take on the old denim go-to classic. I’m especially in love with these red cropped jeans.
  5. Hair accents. Hats, scarfs, big bows, feathers, whatever… I want to try them all. Some of them are insanely weird looking with my new short hair cut. But some work and I’m willing to try them all to see what’s best. For instance can we talk about this adorable green fedora hat by Kate Spade or this black and white one!

LOL All my family in Chicago was rubbing in the warm weather while I was cold in California then they got the cold snap and it was warm in Boston. This whole spring the weather has been funky. I’m ready for regular temps and the sunny heat of summer.

I love neon nails! But, I can not do them myself :( …Oh, well. And yay! for the tangerine colour! I don’t have this colour in my closet, but it’s on my wish list. A tangerine top and a purple skirt. Colour blocking all the way.
    Have a happy weekend! :)

Katherine – Why can’t you do neon nails? I agree not all of them are flattering, but some of the colors may surprise you. I tried coral and was shocked at how much I liked it.

  2. Debbie Baker Burns

Katy, I agree with every one of your picks! I just picked up a bunch of new nail polishes, I love floral shoes, I’m presently in love with bright orange lipstick, I would love to have a pair of pink jeans and I recently bought this feathery hairband I can’t wait to try. I already have a peacock feather headpiece that I love. I love your picks! Also, I have to share because I’m excited…this was my first post on my new website. I braved up and moved from blogger to Bluehost and I’m using and Thesis. I noticed you used Thesis and I like the look of your blog. Debbie

Debbie – Congrats on the move to WordPress and using the Thesis theme. You’ll love it!! I also use Bluehost and love their service. It’s a great combination.

Ooh, yes on tangerine. I’m a big fan of it striped with fresh white (and stripes happen to be one of my favorite summer trends!). I’m also a fan of the hair accessory trend, but that one feels like more of a stretch for me. What a fun topic to get really in the summertime mode.

Also – love the translation of the floral trend into shoes. I did too many ‘long floral dresses’ last time that was a big trend, but I think I could do a great floral shoe. Thanks for the inspiration!

Amy – I agree with you on the floral. I think it can be overboard. I got one floral dress to introduce the trend to my closet but will stick with that one piece and go with the floral accents instead.

  4. Emily

totally need to find myself a pair of coloured jeans for the summer- thinking peach or mint coloured!! great post and topic again this week – loving seeing what everyone else has put :)

    1. katy_rose1 Post author

Mint green denim sounds amazing!! Let me know it you find a great pair. I might need to copy you!

Thanks for showing me Sally’s post on this. I’m so behind in all my blog reading I know I am missing out on some great stuff from the previous weeks.

  5. The JMay

I always love to see how many of us have some of the same favourite trends!
Haven’t mastered the greenish-blue nail colour (don’t like how it looks with my skin tone) but I did add orange nails to my list…love!

Thanks again for the great question Katy!

To me it is all about the color green you are trying. The one I’ve got on is more of a Robin’s Egg green so it works. But some of them look a little too wicked witch of the west for me.

    1. katy_rose1 Post author

Thanks hun! It feels good to be back and to be interacting with the group again.

Kelly – Thanks for your sweet words about FBFF. I’m glad you’ve found it to be a helpful forum. And sorry about the FBFF mix-up. I meant to tell those of you in another season that you could talk about your own upcoming trends. Oops.

Kenzi – No worries about the length of your post. There is no guidelines for doing this. And I hope your car troubles get fixed. There is something to be said for living in a city where a car isn’t needed. I may never move out of the urban environment for that reason alone.

    1. katy_rose1 Post author

Ahh!! Congrats! I’ve been so out of it these past weeks that I didn’t even know. Hopefully you find a great pair of pants that will work with your very chic baby bump!

    1. katy_rose1 Post author

Sorry about that! I knew sending so many questions ahead of time would cause a little trouble along the way. And you’re right, at least you already have next week’s post pre-written.

Linda – So True! Floral shoes can make your feet look huge or your legs look a little stubby. But the right pair can be a stunning wardrobe addition.

    1. katy_rose1 Post author

Jessi – After seeing that crackle polish I’m totally hooked and want to try it asap!!

    1. katy_rose1 Post author

Yeah, the hair accents are certainly a great thing for short hair. It’s amazing how well they work!

  7. Tara

I just bought some hair feathers this week – I can’t wait to try! I do love the tangerine, but it doesn’t look too good on me, so I limit to accessories. One of these days, I will get the courage to buy colored jeans. 😀

Heidi – I could so see you pulling off a subtle coral nail color. It’s not exactly neon but it’s totally in trend. You should try it!

  9. Goody @Curvatude

i too am loving neon nails…actually they are a staple in my life even during the cold months, i just love that pop of color.

and although they would normally never enter my radar, i have been feeling quite a few of the floral shoes, i even purchased a pair but returned them because they just didn’t fit right!

but viva la summer and all it’s fun fab trends!

    rock it!

Neon nails area certainly new to me. In the winter, if I paint my nails, I go with dark colors or the basic deep red. But now you’ve got me thinking I could give it a try in the colder months too.

  10. Miss Rockwell

Wow! It was 65 in San Fran. I would love to be basking in that glory right about now because it’s HOTT as fishgrease here!!! Anyways, I’ve linked up again. I have so much fun doing these trend topics. It’s soo fun to see what everyone else chooses too!

I’ve been getting more into nail color/art and I’ve purchased LOTS of neon colors for the summer-ohhh, I can’t wait to paint! And what I wouldn’t do for a pair of floral wedges this summer. I’m going to search for some as soon as I clock out.

I dunno. The 65* sounds nice, but it forced me to buy a sweatshirt just to stay warm while walking around San Francisco. It certainly was a rude awakening when I expected warm sun for my time in Cali. LOL Leson learned!!

    1. katy_rose1 Post author

Oh I dunno – dresses and dressing up shorts can be pretty stylish. A lot of the FBFF bloggers mentioned shorts as one of their top summer trends. You can totally work it!

  11. Kirstin Marie

I am seriously loving the colorful nails. I am the same, growing my nails out takes a long time, and polishing short nails isn’t pretty. I’ve found my nails actually grow faster if they are polished (weird, but true). Glad to see you back from vacation!

Kristin – I wonder if your nails grow more because you are more aware of them and maybe treat them a little better when polished so they won’t chip. Or at least I think that is the case with my nails.

    1. katy_rose1 Post author

Patti – Welcome to FBFF and congrats on completing your first one! I grabbed white skinny jeans this summer but I don’t think they count in the colored denim category. Although, white is a trend all its own.

Phikni -Welcome to the group. I’m glad you decided to participate in this week’s questions.

Oops. I forgot about the weather differences around the world. I meant to tell you guys to post on whatever season you were approaching. Sorry about that.

  12. EvaNadine

i think i may have just added my link several times — apologies if i did!

when i first started thinking about it, i couldnt think of a single trend that was summer-specific that i hadnt already pointed out in my spring trends post.
but then as soon as i started looking, i found more than just 5 — so i included 8 of them in my post!

I had a hard time coming up with different trends too. So I went with more of the accents than full outfit type trends. It seemed to work. Plus there are so many new looks out there that it wasn’t too difficult to find some more.

    1. katy_rose1 Post author

LOL thanks Brittney! The coral and neon nails are a little obsession of mine now.

I’m doing mostly skirts and dresses too for my personal ‘Skirts with a Heel’ challenge – but one pair of fun colored jeans might have to sneak their way into the mix. Now to find the perfect pair…

  14. Ciana

I haven’t been adventurous enough for colored jeans…yet! I have seen them on some pretty chic ladies, though :)

  15. Elizabeth Snyder

I forgot about the weather differences around the world. Sadly, maternity clothing isn’t always the most stylish. Katy, am with you on the nails and coloured jeans! I’m so behind in all my blog reading I know I am missing out on some great stuff from the previous weeks.
