A couple weeks ago, for Fashion/Beauty Friend Friday we talked about our inspiration when it comes to blogging and so many people said that other fashion bloggers are a huge inspiration. What a change from just a few years ago when we would have likely answered very differently. But there are many other factors that influence us.
1. What magazines do you subscribe to? Until this January I had been a Lucky subscriber for the last 5 years. Currently, the only mag I get in the mail monthly is Runner’s World – it is really well written and I’m actually interested in reading every part of each issue. It’s one of the only mags I’ve ever come across that I read cover to cover and don’t skim through.
2. Do you watch any fashion TV shows? I actually don’t watch TV. Occasionally at the gym I’ll catch What Not to Wear or America’s Next Top Model, but I don’t follow those shows.
3. Beyond blogs, what websites do you frequent for fashion inspiration? I actually really like the New York Times style section – I skim through those articles about twice a week. I also skim through Refinery29 and The Cut, which is actually a blog so I guess that doesn’t count. LOL Apparently I don’t have much of a reading life outside of blogs.
4. Advertisements play a huge role in forming public opinion about a product or brand… what ads do you like and why? I always love Michael Kors ads. I like the yellow tint they have. I like how the woman stands out in each photograph and everything else tends to blur into the background. I like how the depicted relationship between the women and the men in the photographs is classy and tasteful. I really like the Kate Spade ads as well. The colors are vibrant, The scenes the kind you wish you could jump into. Plus the women have this throw back feel to the greats like Grace Kelly, which exuded elegance and femininity.
5. Do you own any fashion books? I’ve owned the Bobby Brown Teenage Beauty Book since I was in college and love it! It’s the book I most often recommend to someone who is trying makeup for the first time. It’s amazingly helpful plus she has such a great take on a girl’s true natural beauty and dignity. It’s an uplifting read. I also own The Sartorialist book and like to skim through it from time to time in order to remind myself that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, colors and ages. Besides these two books… I don’t exactly collect fashion books.

I used to have that Bobbi Brown book , too, but I think I sold it. It was a good one. I also used to have the Cindy Crawford makeup book and it was amazing. That might be around here somewhere. I love seeing what kinds of magazines people read…it says so much about them. And I didn’t know you were a runner!

I’m pretty good at ignoring ads but I’m a big collector of fashion and beauty books (as you’ll see in my post today!). I used to have that Bobbi Brown book and one by Kevyn Aucoin, too. Now I’m wondering what I did with them; I’ll have to go hunting through my bookshelves!

I love your description of why you like the Michael Kors ads: a university level dissection, I’d say! We share a love of running and I’ve heard about Runner’s World and you’ve made me decide to give it a good browse. I’ve already posted and forgot to mention that I own Bobbi Brown’s “On Beauty” (I think that’s the name of it) which gives a terrifically realistic approach to beauty for women of all ages.

Good God Katie, I can’t believe you don’t watch television! How do you spend your evenings?!!! I love good TV.
Honestly when I think of my favourite tv shows (Lost, Buffy, Battlestar Galactica etc etc) the good ones have had an impact on my life! I decided to make working in television my career after watching a BBC drama called ‘Our Friends in the North’. It was that good, that thought provoking that I thought I want to do that. I don’t watch TV for the sake of it though! Am going to start working my way through the other blogs now! It’s a great set of questions and really interesting to see what people get inspired by!

I’m a huge fan of the Michael Kors ads too! Totally forgot about those (probably because I’d go bankrupt buying from that line). I remember reading an interview with Michael Kors talking about the idea behind those ads– he imagined them as being a jetsetting American couple. I’m with you on fashion magazines too, they definitely don’t influence or inspire me nearly as much as other blogs!

Great idea to pick out specific ads. I always notice them in magazines but never can find them online! I always love the Tommy campaigns, so preppy and pretty and so my style! Great questions as usual!
