For Fashion/Beauty Friend Friday we have talked about going the all-natural route when it comes to hair care, but we’ve never discussed your usual routine. So here goes…
1. How often do you get your hair cut? When it is long or I’m growing it out I might go about 2 to 3 months. (It’s odd that I have only gotten my hair cut three times since moving here in August.) When it is short I usually get a cut every 6 weeks since it grows so unbelievably fast and I don’t like the bad grow-out near mullet stage that happens with short cuts.
I’m always going with new looks… never keeping one for too long. Life is too short to have only one haircut define you.
2. Do you go to the same stylist each time, try someone new, go to the cheap hair cutting chains or live it up in a salon? When I was in St. Louis I tried out a couple different stylists at the same salon before I happened upon Andy and was hooked for two years until I moved. *sigh* In Boston I lucked out and found Anthony with the first haircut I got in this town. I don’t see me leaving him anytime soon. He’s a whiz; afterall how many stylists can give you a cut that looks amazing on day one and on day 90?
To be honest, when I was in high school and college I always got my hair cut at the cheap hair places. Cost Cutters and Great Clips were my friend! If I still wore my hair long and curly I’d still be going to those places since there isn’t much they can do to mess up a curly long cut.
3. Do you color your hair? How often? What’s your natural color? Yes! I started putting sun-in in my hair in 9th grade, continuing with that regiment until college. Then I started box coloring my hair and switching up the colors as often as I liked. It was mostly blonde – although box blonde can tend to be more orange than true blonde, so it wasn’t always pretty. Two years ago I went back towards the more natural brown and now I’ve got highlights to lessen the box-color look. I tend to color it every 6 weeks, since it grows super fast, although with highlights I’ve realized I can get away without coloring it so often, which is also good for the health of my hair.
4. The one thing you always do to keep your hair looking great is: Condition, condition and condition again. I shampoo and then condition my hair and am careful not to wash all the conditioner completely out. I then put in leave-in conditioner before styling my hair. And lastly, at least once a week I dampen my hair, load it with conditioner and sleep with it like that – it works wonders I swear. And you can use super cheap conditioner for it.
5. What hair trend do you love and wish you could rock? It’s no secret I wish I could have long blonde hair with pink tips. I also love the look of blonde hair with ombre purple on the bottom half of the head (a la Kimberly Grace or Jordan Todosey in that teen movie). I also would love to try the platinum blonde look, although I fear that would cost an arm and a leg to have to update every few weeks. Not fun!

Hey Katy, just wanted to drop a quick comment to say hello, and to repeat what every other member of FBFF has said in the past: I think that this community that you have brought together is rather magical, and you have yet again have found us another lovely topic to discuss! xx Sarah Ashley
Aww.. thanks Sarah Ashley – I’m glad to hear you are enjoying the group. You are the first to call it ‘magical.’
Hi Katy, it’s such a joy to be a member of this group!
I like the fact that you don’t settle for just one hair style….life would be too boring, you are totally right!

I love this community! Its really helped me as a blogger expand myself. I’m still fairly new and I’m learning the ins and outs of blogging. Sometimes I wish blogging came with a “Big Sister” mentor program like we had in HS Cheerleading.. haha.

Thanks Kenzi – So glad you are loving the group and I hope it feels a little like a ‘big sister’ mentoring program. We do tend to help each other when needed.
love the haircut and color on you in the last photo
long blonde with purple and/or pink tips is awesome!

Great choice of topic, I felt good about answering these. I’d love to see you try pink tips, how cool would that be. Love all the shots of you!

Find a good stylist and just do it. It’s really so freeing and fun!
LOVED THESE QUESTIONS. My hair is giving me the blues!!!

Katy, you should definitely try platinum once! It’s a great look and worth a go! Okay perhaps not great in terms of your hair condition! Looking forward to reading everyone’s answers!
I waver between wanting to go Platinum blonde. Lately I look at pics of me super blonde and think the brown tends to look better. Maybe at the end of the summer when I am more tan and won’t look all washed out and sickly.
I loved reading this! You look fantastic with both short/long hair. Maybe you’ll have to wig that blonde and pink tip look out!
I’ve had all sort of crazy stuff done to my hair and it’s jet black, so the colouring processes way back when used to take forever!
Agree with you on conditioning… especially if you live in a sunny, hot country or go swimming a lot – gotta give your hair some repair & love! Oh and heating up a bit of good quality olive oil (warm not scorching) and then applying to freshly washed hair and then wrapping it up for 5 mins does wonders for your hair. The best conditioning treatment ever!

Thanks! I can imagine how difficult it is to color jet black hair. It’s hard enough when I’m naturally a light brown. But at the same time it is so fun to play around with, especially since it never lasts forever.
Hi Katy.
This is my first time doing Friend Family. I have been part of the community for a few weeks now I have recieved such great advice via the email list & also been introduced to some great bloggers. Some of the previous Friend Fridays haven’t been too relevant for me (ie re: exercise – I’m lazy), but as I’m getting my haircut this weekend, I thought this was a great one to start on. Thanks for sharing this community via your blog
xo
Kelly – welcome to FBFF! Glad to hear you waited for a topic that worked with you and your blog. Hope you got inspired for your haircut this weekend!
Great post again! I loved doing it and showing of my 10 styles in 10 days post! x
This was great, Katy! It was fun looking back through old photos at all the hairstyles I’ve worn. I have gone short sometimes but not quite to the pixie look you rocked in the second photo. That is so brave!
Jenni recently posted..FBFF- Hair Philosophy
I don’t know it if was brave or lazy. I was headed out to several weeks of leading a summer camp for junior high girls and I knew it needed to be easy to wear and style because there is no time to do your hair while you’re having cannonball contests at the pool and capture the flag wars.
Hi Katy, Hair is a topic near and dear to my heart! I enjoyed doing the post this week. It is hard to keep the same style. I keep changing the length of mine, even a small change makes a difference. Debbie http://thriftygirlvintage.blogspot.com

I’ve always wanted to experiment with “crazy” colors like pink or purple, too! I always get scared that I wouldn’t be able to pull it off though. Thanks for the great deep conditioning treatment tip! I will have to try it

Woo! This is a great topic, I was just wondering if I should switch up my hair!
Oh my gosshhh SUN IN!!! I totally forgot about that! I should’ve included that in the coloring my hair section of my post. Oh the memories…
Oh the memories and oh that weird orange-blonde color! LOL
You and I have very similar philosophies regarding hair cuts and styles – there are so many fabulous ones, it seems a shame to let one define you! I’ve had all kinds of cuts and colors over the years.
Raquelita recently posted..Looking Back- Looking Forward
LOL. One of my roommates from New York just told me she measured our time together by the changing color of my hair. New color – another month has passed. I never realized it fluctuated that much a couple years ago.
This was my first time to participate in FBFF. Thanks for the opp! Fun! You and I are both platinum blonde dreaming… one day?
Welcome to FBFF! Thanks for participating.
haha I love your quote “life’s too short to have one haircut”… I’m not as bold as you!
Kimberlee recently posted..FBFF- Hair Care
HA! I realize that is a philosophy that not many people share. In fact I’m the only one I know who is constantly changing the style. I figure – if it is horrible it will grow out and I live with the humbling experience of a bad cut for a while. So far, luckily, that hasn’t happened.
Such fun questions this week Katy! I’m looking forward to reading about everyone’s hair care routines, especially from pixie redheads like myself! I know I’m not the only one…

Love the “sleep with conditioner in your hair” tip! I’ve never thought of that. My hair does better with less conditioner, actually, or so I thought…
I’m chopping my hair soon and am hunting for a chin length style… any ideas?

A blunt-cut bob would be cute, or even a choppy, layered variation. (Then again, I’m biased; I had that cut for years.)

These questions were right on time for me this week! LOL. Conditioner is an absolute must and I love your recent hair cut and color! It looks fabulous!
MJ recently posted..Friend Friday- All About The Hair
I think your hair looks super cute right now. You could put some pink highlights in it with non-perm color if you ever wanted to mix it up. Manic Panic makes a non-permanent version of its vivid bright colors, available at Hot Topic (where else?): http://search.hottopic.com/clothing/Semipermanent%20Hair%20Dye
I will attempt to make one defense of keeping the same haircut for a long time.
Once I found a cut that was flattering and brought me lots of compliments, that was the end of dramatic experimentation for me. Plus (like I say in my post), I’ve learned that certain lengths simply work better on me. These days, I’m really just tinkering with the margins.
But everyone’s different. Finding what works is part of the fun!
Heidi/Closet Coach recently posted..Friend Friday- Flow it- show it- long as you can grow it- hair!
Oh that is true, if there is a haircut that is totally flattering on you it is a good idea to keep it for a while. But I think what happens is then people keep it for years and years and it is no longer fresh or flattering.
I always forget that coloring can damage your hair so I guess that’s another reason for me to stick with my natural color for now at least until the greys get too overwhelming.
Sarah recently posted..FBFF Hair-Tastic
Stick with natural if you can. I never gave it a chance until it was too late to try.

I completely forgot about pink tips, I wanted them so badly when I was in high school and college! And I’ve always wanted platinum blonde too but the maintenance is intense and it’s so bad for your hair. My friend’s been platinum blonde for years and can’t grow her hair out because it keeps breaking. I used to use sun-in too and I’m so glad I graduated from that now… my hair’s definitely too dark for it to look good!

Enjoyed the topic today. Hair is such a poloarizing thing for a woman.
Some many “rules” going out the door on not going gray, women over 40 having long hair, how many colors in one’s hair, etc. It’s great to see what others have to say.
Thanks and have a great holiday weekend.

Love that you experiment on your hair. I used to experiment quite a bit but now I am kind of in the land of complacency! What a lovely topic for FFBF
It still exists. I wasn’t sure but then a friend of mine said she uses it still and I was blown away. Not sure where you can find it. Probably a drug store.
I loved this one!
What a fun topic, hair is so transformative. I’ve been known to lop it off completely after a long relationship ended, doing wilder things to it in between. I’ve always thought a post devoted to my past hair “adventures” would be fun.
