Friend Friday: Spring Trends 2011

by katyrose on April 8, 2011

I’m pretty excited about a number of the fashion and beauty trends for this Spring. So excited, that I’ll be doing little how-to wear features over the next week or two. So check back for more info on the Spring Trends for 2011 and how to wear them.

What 5 Spring Trends will I be rocking this year?

1. Maxi Dresses – While this is certainly a continuation of last year’s spring/summer trend; maxi dresses are everywhere this season. They come in patterns, solids, florals, animal print, anything really…. I’m no stranger to this look. I love my bold pink-flower maxi dress from Express and the all black one – both of which I wore last summer. But this year I will be adding a light floral dress and one in the orange/pink color.

2. Floral – This is a trend that will be in this spring and back again in the fall, is the latest runways are any indication. To be honest I’ve never been huge into the floral look – too girly for my tastes. But I like some of the stuff I have been seeing lately. I’ll likely incorporate the trend in through subtleties and pieces that will transition well between seasons. (For more on how to wear this trend check back next week – I’ve got a little feature planned.)

3. White-Out – To be honest I LOVE this look but am not totally sure it is something that I can pull off. However I really really want to be the girl that can rock this look. It might take some experimentation on my part and some strategic purchasing but, hey, that’s what new trends are all about, right. Check out my tips on how to wear the White-Out trend.

4. Cat-Eye Sunglasses – I’m all about big sunglasses. But this season, the big sunnies are getting a little turn-up, in the corners that is. They are taking on a cat-like appearance while still remaining large and in charge. I’ve got a great pair from Target and they are likely to be my go-to pair all summer long.

5. 60′s Inspired-Dresses – It’s no secret that I love skirts and dresses during the warmer months. And what better way to show off the girly side than going with the very feminine silhouettes that the 60′s fashion afforded women?

What trend are you looking forward to this Spring? Leave a comment and let me know.

(PS Did you know you can enter to win a copy of my book Aurora Undefined? Yesterday the first copy was given away on Twitter. Now you can win one on this blog and on Facebook. And check out my writing blog.)

We did this for fall too and people were loving it. I’ll have to make it a quarterly thing, instead of just twice a year. It’s fun to write and certainly got me excited for the warmer weather. – Katy

Oh, maxi dresses! Brilliant. I actually got my very first one this year. I haven’t worn it yet, but I’m excited. And I’ve got my cat-eye glasses ready to go. I actually didn’t realize they were a trend when I picked them up! I’m living under a rock, clearly. I definitely agree on the floral trend, too; it’s never been my thing at all, yet this year there seems to be a pretty wide array of options. It makes it more accessible to everyone, in a way.

Lovely choices again this week, Katy! x

Your first Maxi dress this year? Take my word for it… it will soon become an essential in your closet. They are so comfortable and chic. I love mine.

I actually found a maxi dress from a couple of years ago in my closet today! I had forgotten all about it, so that was a fun find for Spring faves! It’s funny, I didn’t write about maxis or floral in my post, but they spilled over into photos of my other favorites! Great picks, lady!

As I was transitioning my closet I kept looking for a maxi dress I had last year and then remembered I gave it away at one of the swaps. Boo! Guess that means I can replace it with a new one – right?!

i am a firm believer that it is more important to dress in what you feel comfortable in and what looks good on you, instead of trying for the latest trend. But it is fun to look at what is new and to think of little ways to bring it into what you already have for an updated look.

I agree with you on the floral prints — I’m not usually a huge fan, but something about the smaller, less frilly prints I’ve been seeing lately has made me start considering a skirt or a scarf or something for spring and fall!

Lisa -I’m going to do a post on the floral trend and how to wear it, because it is scary territory for a lot of us. I completely agree that an accessory like a bracelet or scarf can be the perfect way to work the trend without being overwhelmed by it.

I’m with ya on the floral. That was one of mine, too. It would be fun to get some floral accessories to incorporate instead of, or in addition to, floral clothing.

I’m also pretty intimidated by the white out trend. I would totally do a white dress, but separates? Maybe I’ll let the waif-ish, model types take care of that look.

I see maxi dresses on fashion blogs but have yet to see someone wear one in person. I wonder when that trend will hit Pittsburgh.
Colleen recently posted..Friend Friday- Spring Trends

Colleen – How interesting that you haven’t seen anyone wearing a maxi dress yet. They are all over fashion blogs now and I’ve had one for two years that I bought in St. Louis. But they certainly have a much larger following this season. You can be the first one to rock the trend in Pittsburgh.

Reply

Colleen April 8, 2011 at 2:19 pm

I saw people on fashion blogs with them last year and didn’t see anyone wear them. Maybe I need to get out more and people just don’t wear them to work or to Target (pretty much the only places I go).

I’m pretty sure I was the only person at work who wore colored tights. Then I saw one other girl wear them near the end of the season. Were colorful tights a trend this past winter or did I just follow fashion bloggers that wore colorful tights even though it wasn’t a trend?

my favorite is the 60s inspired dress! The shades and flowers are cool as well. The others don’t work for me that much. I think trends are nice, but not every trend is for every person. The good side of having so many trends at the same time today – everyone can pick the one that suits best. In earlier decades one didn’t have that much of a choice. Downside: There is just too much choice out there and in the end all the trends come back. Not a lot is new and with so many trends, the frequencies are faster as the choices are kind of limited. If this is now a plus, I don’t know.

Anja – I couldn’t agree more! Trends may be in at the moment but that doesn’t mean we each have to wear the current ‘it’ sensation. It is all about finding what works for you and your personal style. I think some of the trends can be incorporated into our current wardrobes through accessories or little add-ons to update our style without wearing something that doesn’t work for us personal.

This was so much fun! I love your #1 & #5… I don’t have any dresses now (I know, right?!), but I’d like to add a maxi and some 60′s flare to the mix!

I am looking forward to wide leg jeans. I never stopped wearing them. I love dark wash a trouser cut wide leg jean. It’s so slimming, and flattering. Also, I would love to try a maxi dress. I’m petite, and have a hard time finding them.

Great questions this week. I love how you’re on the 60s look while I’m on the 70s. Vive la difference. I love that fashion lets us do this.

I am so going to enjoy checking everyone’s post and links on this topic tonight. I am sure there are going to be a lot of overlaps but the links and photos would be different.

I really wish I could pull off maxi dresses and white ensembles but alas, I don’t think they look very good on me (and finding a maxi dress/skirt to fit a 5’4 frame is a losing battle). I’ll be looking to incorporate some white pieces into my wardrobe for sure.

I’m mainly excited about neutrals, floral prints and perfumes, bright colors, and wide leg jeans (I love my some skinny jeans but they’re starting to feel oppressive).

I am excited about floral as well. For one, I have never been a floral-loving type gal, until now! I’m excited to look girly and Spring-like! By the way, loved your post about your background! Very interesting to know a little about you!

I joined FBFF Thursday night (a little too late to whip up five good trends!), but I have to say, I totally agree with you on the white-out trend. I want to rock an all-white outfit, but I think I need to wait for a little bit more of a tan– and even then, I don’t know if I can pull it off. It looks so effortlessly chic, though. Anyway, I’m already looking forward to next week’s questions!

Katy,
I almost emailed you with this but thought I’ll just post it here.
So good thing you had these questions this week because I had to do all that research. Then today at a baby shower I as at someone asked what spring trends we liked and which ones we didn’t like. I knew what trends there were. I felt so proud. I could also add to the conversation. It was great. It’s probably what made the shower not awful. I mean I hadn’t talked to the mom to be since my wedding (3 years ago) and before that her wedding (1 year prior)

Isn’t it funny how there are so many interpretations of the Spring/Summer trends. As I am on year long shopping ban I have been thinking about trying to create all the catwalk trends from clothes I already have in my wardrobe to see if it can be done. This Friend Friday has spurred me on to do it. Thanks Katy

love

These are all great ideas for this season! Floral has a chance to become a big hit this summer. Scarves are also going to be a hot commodity this spring and summer and will be a great accent to any outfit!
