This was completely unplanned at the time, but these questions come just two days before I’m going to be running the Providence, RI half-marathon and less than two weeks after the historic Boston Marathon. How appropriate that we are talking about fitness today for Friend Friday.
1. Do you keep some kind of fitness routine? Why? I never really used to have a workout routine. In fact I never liked to workout at all. Occasionally in college I’d hit the gym with a friend when I got the sudden, and usually short-lived, desire to lose weight. But I didn’t know what I was doing and didn’t have any plans in place. Then when I lived in New York I decided weight loss was a must; but even more importantly I needed to get my daily headaches under control. A doctor suggested working out daily would be a solution and I picked up running. When I moved to St. Louis I joined a gym and started working out four to five times a week. It’s stuck with me. I mostly do cardio work – spin classes, running, and using the eliptical. But now I’ve begun to mix in more core and weights – not to be some buff machine but to have some tone.
Just before running the St. Louis half-marathon in May 2010
2. Has working out, maybe training for a marathon or something of that nature, helped with your own perception of body image? I don’t know if it has changed the way I look at my own body, but it does have solid results that you can see in the mirror, more toned legs from all the running, a slightly flatter stomach, a thinner face. Just the little changes, that might not be noticeable to others has helped me have more confidence in who I am and to be proud of my body, no matter the size on the tag.
3. When you are hitting the gym or just going out for a long walk what do you wear? Is it about functionality or fashion? LOL. I used to go to the gym in baggy gym shorts and t-shirts I had from college. My mindset was that I was just working out, sweating, getting red in the face, looking gross anyway, so who cares what I looked like. But when I cut my hair short a couple summers ago I realized that I looked more and more like a boy when at the gym. I purchased some more fitted pieces of workout clothing and realized that while it is not about making a fashion statement it is good to still look like a chick when working out. Now I wear mostly yoga pants and fitted t-shirts. (I did a post on this back in 2009 and surprisingly not much has changed in what I tend towards.)
Just before the Chicago Marathon in October 2009 with my sister Emily
4. Do you feel there is a cultural perception of what you ‘should’ be doing for your own physical fitness? I think there is more a cultural perception that you should be a certain size and your level of physical fitness doesn’t matter as much as the size you are. Unfortunately that is the wrong idea. Someone can be a little on the heavier side but in great physical condition, the same a skinny person can be in terrible physical health. We need to take care of our bodies – treat them right, give them the things they need to carry us gracefully into old age. For a long time I used to focus on how much weight I could lose by stepping up my fitness level. Now, I have a different mentality – how much more can I accomplish by stepping up my fitness routine… run a little further or a little faster, do another set of reps with the weights, 5 extra pushups… whatever. it’s a much more attainable goal and it is much more fulfilling than watching the scale daily.
5. Dream big… what would be your ultimate fitness goal. No question… The Boston Marathon 2013. Close behind that would be a sub 1:30 half marathon. And ultimately – an Ironman.
What’s your big fitness goal? Leave a comment below and let me know. Maybe we should start a virtual running club together.

Katy, I totally agree with you on #4!! I was really curious about what others would answer there, because it’s certainly all about looks in our culture! No one seems to care about fitness when you look at the Public Health statistics, you know?!
Once again, good luck at the race!

I liked this week’s questions because it pointed out the differences between all of us and how we can all be different and still fit.
Katy, I really admire you in that you can run marathons and obviously love it. I just can’t seem to get into running like a lot of people have. Hiking? YES. All those other strange outdoor sports, definitely. But the love of running evades me…((SIGH)). Good luck on your half marathon though-I’m sure you’ll do amazingly well.
Great set of questions this week-thanks!

Actually running isn’t something that I absolutely love. What I do love is running a marathon – the swell of the crowd, the feeling of accomplishment, the bragging rights are all an amazing high that is hard to describe until you are in the midst of it. Each time I’m running a marathon I start thinking… ok when’s the next one. But the training part is when I step back and think, really? Do I like this enough?
eek, this week’s questions really made me realize what i lazy bones i’ve been the last few years. freshman 15? more like undergrad 20. college wreaks HAVOC on your fitness routines.
Cate recently posted..Friend Friday- Fitness and Fashion
College was a chore for me too. There are just so many other things to do and so many people to hang with. Oh and so much good pizza to eat. Although, now I wish I had a legit fitness routine in college. It would have made my young professional years a lot easier.
I honestly, truly wish that I could be one of those people that enjoys running. So many of my friends run and bike and do things like that together, but I just don’t find enjoyment in it. Not to mention that I work out at 4:30AM and I don’t think it’d be safe for me to run by myself at that time of morning.
Melissa recently posted..Daily MelWear- Blue and Gray
Mel – I actually cheat and run a lot of my miles on a treadmill. Many runners don’t consider that legit, but I’m not used to running in the snow and freezing cold and I’m not going to run in the dark alone. And the love for running – I’m not sure I even have it entirely yet. I do, however, love marathons.
Good luck on your HM Katy!
Thank you for this topic! It was an excellent opportunity to talk about my passion: running!
Have a happy Friday and weekend!

This week’s group of questions are timely for me, because I have recently decided it’s time for me to get up off the couch and get working on some of these goals of mine. Some are financial, like watching my budget. Some are blog related. And some are about my diet and exercise routine. Thanks for the jump start!

Way to go Debbie! My advice is to start small and push yourself to do a little more each time you workout. The effort will seem minimal and not worth it on some days but you’ll look back in a month and be impressed at how far you’ve come already.
Great questions this week. I wrote tons and could have written much more.
Thanks for FBFF!!
Have a great weekend!!

I agree that physical fitness isn’t completely depended on a certain size or weight or even routine. The best thing is to listen to your body, acknowledge your life situation. Having a fulltime career, a family in comparison to having a busy study schedule demand their own approach on fitness and health. It is different for everyone.
I hope you get to do that marathon. Go Katy !

Runner’s World recently had a debate in the magazine that asked if you could be a good runner and still a little flabby. Obvious there are varying views but I think it’s all about knowing yourself and your body. Not everyone needs to be lean and muscular to be healthy and happy.
Good luck on the half this weekend, Katy! I’m still thinking about whether or not I should sign up for the one in October in Newport that you mentioned yesterday…that would be an incredible goal to hit, I just have to figure out whether I’m going to have the time in the next six months to do that intense level of training.
I will let you know!

Elly – Let me know if you decide to and I am going to drum up more support from some of the other bloggers in the months ahead. It would be fun to run it with our blog names written on the back. Make it a Boston Bloggers thing.
I think reading these answers is just going to show me how lazy I really am. Or maybe it’ll give me a kick in the pants to go out and do something about it. Doubtful, but that would be neat!

I feel midly guilty to my body that I’m not doing anywhere near enough to keep fit. I didn’t answer the questions as I am somewhat embarassed that I have nothing to say. This is a bit of a reminder to get my backside in gear. Well done on all your running, you look fab in your shots

Sophie – Don’t feel bad. We are all at different points in our lives. Sometimes it is easier or more important to workout frequently than at other times. No worries. You can get in the swing of it slowly. And I am a firm believer in taking advantage of even 30 minutes. It’s better than nothing.
I love that you’ve run marathons, never knew that! Right now my goal is to be running 5ks again during the summer, with my injury and all. But my big goals are a sub 2:00 half, and to someday qualify for and run Boston
Michelle recently posted..Its hip to be square
Michelle – Have you looked into the Newport marathon/half-marathon in October? I’m trying to convince some of the local bloggers to train and do it with me. I think I’ll be doing the half-marathon in hopes of working on improving my speed significantly from this half marathon on Sunday and then next one in October. Would be awesome if you did it!
I will certainly think about it! Have to see where I’m at with my old lady hip and all… I could definitely use some work on my speed!

LOL I wonder how many of the FBFF bloggers went and worked out today as a result of this post. Probably a fair number. I did my biggest workout after the Boston Marathon – felt energized to push it.
Love that you have run marathons – those pictures of you are so great! You may have inspired me to kick up my running and work towards a more lofty goal than completing a 10k. Great questions this week – I look forward to reading everyone’s responses!
Elissa recently posted..Fashion Beauty Friend Friday- Fitness
Elissa – If you can run a 10k you can totally run a half marathon. You are already more than half-way through the training with the 10k. You just need to add on a couple more miles and you’ll be ready! Trust me, it’s worth it to be able to say you conquered that!
A virtual running club would be so much fun! Of course, I’m nowhere near your level of running just yet . . . but maybe someday. =)
Tiffany recently posted..FBFF – Fitness & Fashion
I’ll have to figure out how to do that. It would be fun to spur each other on. Hopefully it doesn’t mean starting a whole other blog.
Love these questions! I’ve just started working out again. I do really short and compact work outs, and they’re really working! The key for me is just to keep going…
I totally agree with you that there isn’t much societal pressure to be healthy at all – just to be thin and look good. I focus my energy on health instead of weight loss or size, and that’s been serving me well so far.
Love,
CarolAnn
CarolAnn Edie recently posted..Friend Friday- Fitness and Fashion
The compact workouts are so often overlooked. Until a couple months ago I wouldn’t even bother to go to the gym if I didn’t have at least an hour. But now I realize I can get a heck of a lot done in 30 minutes if I really throw myself into it.
So true! I did P90X for a while, and those workouts are so long! Now I can get the same results in a third of the time… or less. The key is finding something that you enjoy enough and is convenient enough that you’ll actually do it and stick to a routine. At least, that’s what it’s all about for me.
Love,
CarolAnn

Great questions!
I think you raised some really good points about not chasing weight but rather focusing on other goals. Weight can fluctuate so much and if you’re exercising hard and developing muscle then muscle is a lot denser than fat, therefore heavier… so might not actually see any drop in weight, yet you’ll have a much better body.

The crowds and feeling of accomplishment at the end of a marathon can be pretty convincing motivation.
I just got into running not to long ago. I have always HATED running but I have learned to love it and now use it as a stress reliever. I am working on running a 5k and eventually a half marathon, but I have a long way to go!

Good luck in your half marathon!! I once ran through the New York City Marathon in three inch heels (have to cross the street at some point). It was like a real life game of Frogger. My ultimate fitness goal is just to heal my injuries and maybe go further into advanced yoga.
Alex Elizabeth recently posted..FBFF- Fashion Fitness …Lululemon
Yoga is actually one of the things I’ve never tried. But I think I’m going to need to launch into that if I keep up the running schedule I plan – need to stretch and tone the core much more to keep up the distance and speed. Thanks for the reminder.
PS I did a similar thing through the NYC marathon a few years ago. It’s taking your life in your hands when you attempt that.
i loved these questions and i find all of the different answers fasinating!

Thanks Daphne! I feel like people think it is a huge feat to run and train a half marathon – but as I get ready for the run this Sunday I’m reminded how little I actually trained and how this can be done without a ton of dedicated hours. Then again I do a lot of other workouts to it isn’t always a matter of logging running miles.
Your answer to #4 is perfection. I love what you say there about fitness goals being about the level of fitness rather than outward appearances. Working out to lose weight takes all the fun out of exercising and makes it sure that you’ll give it up and probably eat even more because you feel you “deserve” it or have worked it off (when you haven’t). It takes like an hour to run off two cookies; if you make it about that it becomes self-defeating rather than empowering.
So true! Plus to be honest, if you are really working out you aren’t going to be losing a ton of weight. Your shape and size might shift but the scale numbers are not going to drop dramatically. What does change is the way you feel about yourself!
People who run marathons or do the Ironman absolutely amaze me- good luck girl!!
Loved these questions – have only just started to take my fitness seriously and this week’s topic got me thinking about it more, again.
