Friend Friday: Fashion Blogging and Feminism

by katyrose on March 25, 2011

I’ve been out sick for the last two days…. So I am posting the questions and the link-up box below and hope to get around to answering these questions later in the day.

1. Do you think there is an incompatibility between feminism and a love for fashion?
2. There is more to each of us than a love for fashion, how do you incorporate every aspect of yourself into your blog?
3. With the fashion industry still being a male-dominated profession, how do you think it would differ if women played a larger role?
4. How is your self-image and the way you carry yourself informed by your beliefs?
5. Do you think clothing/makeup/hair helps communicate the truth about yourself or are those things superfluous add-ons?

Thank you for this week’s questions. Fashion and femininity have a tricky, complicated connection, but it’s so important for us to examine their relationship.

I felt like these questions were extremely hard. I couldn’t come up with examples or what I thought about them. I guess my mind wasn’t in the correct frame of mind to do it.

Man, this week’s questions were really tough! I’m an avowed, active, agitated feminist, but I have a real hard time squaring that with my love of fashion, so these questions really made me think. Thanks for picking feminism as an FBFF topic — I can’t wait to read some of these answers!

I think my perspective on comments comes more from writing than receive them. I often scan through someone’s comments on a post I connect with and what I want to say is already written. At those times and when I just don’t have enough time or brain left, I often leave short comments, like “Love this look” or “I think your ___ is so pretty”. To me it’s more important to let the person know I love their stuff and what they are creating than to worry about whether or not it’s original. I think it’s important to leave positive feedback even short stuff when I can.

To a certain extent our responses can really only be as good as the questions, and I must say (as many others have already) you do a fantastic job, Katy! This particular topic was a bit challenging because I am new to fashion blogging, yet it was fun just the same.

I think there are also plenty of “old-timers” who will benefit as well. As a newbie, it’s interesting to see how various bloggers treat their readership — some are friendly and others not so much. Of course some bloggers are very busy with a high traffic, so that must make it difficult to keep up with it all without feeling overwhelmed!

Anyway, thank you Katy & the FBFF network! :)
