Outfit 14 of 30. To be honest, this is why I don’t like button-down shirts. Even the ones with some feminine shape still tend to look like a box. UGH! Although this shirt does look much better paired with a jacket or layered under something else. I wanted to try and wear it alone. I was stumped as to how to do that and tried this skinny belt, which I really don’t think did anything to whole look or to add dimension to the outfit. I think I might try a larger belt and a scarf the next-time around. Now it’s a challenge for me to figure out how else to wear this shirt, because I do really like the floral pattern and the primary colors.
Tip: See outfit troubles as a challenge not as a downfall – otherwise you’re likely to never wear an item again after one bad outfit.
Pants: Express
Shirt: Old Navy
Shoes: Shi
Belt: H&M

Maybe you could try wearing it tucked in. The shirt is lovely though

i love the print of your shirt.. but i totally agree.. i never buy button downs.. because they always end up looking really boxy and matronly on me
I love the print and think you look super cute…I agree..maybe tucking it in or a jacket would make you like the look more:)

Katy, it’s such a cute blouse! I agree with Gertrude and Collette– try tucking it into a skirt. I have several button-downs that I wear with skirts only. Also try rolling the sleeves up and down to different lengths. It makes the shirt feel different.
Here’s another one of my tricks: Put your blouse on inside out. Pinch the sides so the shirt fits you better. Pin them (or ask someone to pin it for you, it’s tricky to do it yourself when you’re wearing it). Put the shirt back on the right way. Does it look better? If it does, then you can try sewing it or go to a tailor or dry cleaners who sew– many of them are very reasonable!
I love that floral print.
I tend to avoid button ups because they gap over my chest.

I’m experiencing the same problem with button down shirts as Rebecca – they gap over my chest. Or, if they fit around the chest they’re too big around the shoulders and waist. But I do love the look of button down shirts and haven’t given up on them yet!

ohhh me too, I finally realized that it was the collar of the button down shirt that doesnt suit me.. so I stopped wearing them!!!
Those jeans are super cute!! Are they highwaisted?? if so, that blouse would look really cute tucked in with a wide belt perhaps…! or even wear that blouse with a cordoroy skirt and knee high boots to give it a bit of a Ralph Lauren country look… its a cute blouse on you for sure!!! xoxo j

I’m not a big fan of button downs either. I think this one would look cute tucked into a denim skirt or even a flared type skirt. The print is very cute!
I really like the print on the shirt and the skinny braided belt is terrific — I want one myself now!
I think my problem with button downs may be with the potential for gapping across the breastline.

You look like a teacher in a classroom — in a good way!
Button-downs aren’t for everybody. I personally love them because they tone down my, um, chest region. I suggest tucking in the top next time, though; it does wonders

You are right, it is a lovely print and would be a shame not to wear it again. how about with a skirt or some skinny jeans? Tucked in would be another way.
You will manage!

I always find wearing them under a tanktop (what do you call them, stateside?! Sleeveless fineknit jumpers) gives you the shape while still showing off the pattern. It also makes them look a little more quirky.

A larger belt might work but, I also think it would look great with a cardi!

I have the same exact problem with button downs! I’ve been trying to challenge myself to use them more often in different ways to tackle this issue. (Also, funny enough, I call them button ups… though I button them from the top down so I guess I should be calling them a button down.)

The print on the shirt is so cute, but I have the same problem so please share if you find a solution. For me I think it’s a proportion thing. My back and shoulders are small, but my bust is there. In order to not have the bust-gap, I have to get a bigger size. I’m gonna try to alter some of my button-downs and see if that makes any difference.

Have you tried layering it under a solid sleeveless dress? Rolling the sleeves can also help.

I feel ya, girl. The only time I have felt comfortable in a button down is when I wore with tucked into a highwaisted pencil skirt.
